World Bank follows suit and slashes global forecast

After IMF yesterday, today it is the turn of World Bank that has reportedly slashed the global growth forecast, where it has warned that US alone cannot be expected to be driving the economic recovery.

As part of the bi-annual report, the Bank has reportedly predicted a global growth of 3% for 2014 and 3.3% by 2015, which is well below the June forecast involving 3.4% and 3.5% respectively.

The chief economist Kaushik Basu has reportedly warned that as of now global economy is running on a single engine, which is actually the American one and added that this alone can be taken for a rosy outlook.

Pro-Russians claim huge support in eastern Ukraine voting

DONETSK, Ukraine — Pro-Russian insurgents claimed voters supported succession overwhelmingly after a disputed referendum Sunday in eastern Ukraine that could deepen turmoil here and further set Russia against the West.
Just two hours after polling places closed, insurgents declared that almost 90% of voters backed sovereignty on their paper ballots.
Roman Lyagin, election chief of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, said votes had already been counted. He said about 75% of the Donetsk region's 3 million eligible voters cast ballots, and the vast majority backed self-rule, Associated Press reported.
With no international election monitors, it was impossible to verify the claims.
There was violence in the town of Krasnoarmeisk, about 20 miles from Donetsk. Ukraine national guardsmen opened fire on a crowd outside a town hall where voting was taking place, AP reported.
Denis Pushilin, an insurgent leader in the region, told ITAR-Tass news agency that there had been fatalities, but it was not clear how many.
Voting took place in towns controlled by pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine, despite a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin to postpone the poll.
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry called the voting a "criminal farce.''
"The new government took power with guns," said Nielya Zubkova in Makiivka, referring to acting Ukrainian President Olexander Turchynov, who was brought into power in February after pro-Western demonstrations toppled the regime of President Viktor Yanukovych.
"We are open people but no one came to us and asked what we wanted. We have no choice but to show our opinion in this way."
In other parts of the eastern region, long queues formed outside hastily improvised polling centers where booths were made from drapes stapled over flimsy plywood frames. The ballot papers were printed using a regular printer and contained no special registration marks.
There was only one question on the hastily printed ballots, written in both Ukrainian and Russian: "Do you support the act of state self-rule of the Donetsk People's Republic?" Many of the completed ballots were clearly visible inside the transparent ballot boxes, marked "Yes."
Independent observers reported a number of irregularities at polling stations, with some people seen voting twice.
In Makiivka, an industrial city 16 miles outside Donetsk, there was a festive mood at the local polling center. Russian military songs blared from a loudspeaker as voters lined up outside a municipal building being used as an election office.
Law and order at the polling stations in Donetsk was being provided by pro-independence "self-defense" militia due to lack of enthusiasm from local police, said Yevgeny Afinogeyev, deputy chairman of a polling station in central Donetsk. Although Ukrainian law does not stipulate for regional elections, he insisted the poll was legal, citing a U.N. charter on local self-determination.
"We are working in very difficult conditions," Afinogeyev said as transparent ballot boxes were being set up Saturday. "Our local officials who are motivated only by their corrupt interests are putting sticks in the wheels. They are traitors."
Ukraine's east has been roiled by bloodshed since pro-Russian militants seized a number of government buildings in the Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv regions on April 6 and proclaimed independence from Ukraine. The rebels, tacitly supported by Russia, refuse to recognize Ukraine's new government.
In March, Russia annexed Ukraine's breakaway peninsula of Crimea after locals voted to join Russia in a similar referendum. Ukraine refuses to recognize the regional referendums and accuses Russia of sending security agents to destabilize the region.
Dozens have been killed in attempts by Ukraine to crack down on separatists in Slovyansk, while clashes between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian demonstrators led to the deaths of some 47 people in Odessa last week and at least 20 in Mariupol on Friday.
Many are fearful of the growing instability.
"We are simple workers, we are for stability. Even when Yanukovych was the president we still had some sort of stability," said Victor Ivanonitch, 56, who was voting in favor of the referendum at a polling station in Makiivka and believes autonomy would improve the economic situation. "We want to be independent. We want to be in charge of our money."
Locals in Donetsk — where streets remained calm Sunday — were split on whether to vote for secession or remain part of Ukraine, with a number intimidated by the armed militants occupying the regional council building in the center of the city. Many of those who said they were against independence were opting not to vote at all.
"There is no third way anymore. You have to be either for or against. But why should I hate my own country? So they proclaim independence, but then what?" said Vyacheslav Fomenko, an entrepreneur in Donetsk.
But those who supported independence said they were motivated by lack of trust for the government in Ukraine, not a desire to split up the country.
"Even though I am Russian, I lived all my life in Ukraine and I would never have thought of splitting it up," said Irina Popova, a teacher in Donetsk. "But what's happening now is unbearable. The referendum is the only way to show that we are against this fascism. There is no dialogue in Ukraine. There is no way to unite it again."

Miley Cyrus on 'SNL': 'Hannah Montana' is dead

Miley Cyrus became a household name for families when her Disney Channel television show, "Hannah Montana," premiered in 2006. Cyrus, now 20, quickly rose to pop star fame and has been changing her appearance ever since. Here the singer attends a July 12 event in Los Angeles.

(CNN) -- By hosting "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, Miley Cyrus might have just had the last laugh.
The 20-year-old pop star has eclipsed nearly every other figure in popular culture in the weeks following her salacious twerking-with-teddy-bears routine with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on August 25.
There was no way "Saturday Night Live" was not going to address the subsequent tidal wave of reaction, and the sketch comedy series smartly attacked it right at the start of the cold open.
With "SNL" cast member Kenan Thompson playing a wise old-timer in the year 2045, he recounts what led America to an apocalyptic state of destruction.
"Most folks say it was the government shutdown. Others blame Obamacare. But I remember the exact day America ended: it was the 2013 Video Music Awards," Thompson said.
Cyrus was in on the joke from the start, as the camera cut to her being warned not to take the stage by "old Miley," as played by "SNL's" Miley impressionist, Vanessa Bayer. ("I think I'm hallucinating," Cyrus said in a winking joke. "I must've smoked too much ... cigarettes.")
"Old Miley" was there to warn that the VMAs routine "might be too controversial" and hit all the references in the process: Cyrus' revealing costume that could potentially land her in prison; the constant tongue wagging ("I'm having tiny strokes, yo!" Cyrus explained); and the stuffed animals as stage props. (Cried one stuffed bear before going on stage, "We shouldn't be doing this! This is for kids!")
But in the end, Cyrus told her old self that while she knows kids look up to her as a role model, she's still growing up herself.
"I'm only 20 years old, I need some freedom to grow up and make mistakes," she said. "And no matter what happens, I promise I'll always be true to Miley Cyrus."
Just don't expect her to feel the same way about her former Disney character, "Hannah Montana."
As the 20-year-old said in her opening monologue, "I don't apologize for my VMAs performance. If I owe anybody an apology, it's the people who make the bottom half of shirts. There are a few subjects I'm not going to get into tonight: I'm not going to do Hannah Montana, but I can give you an update. She was murdered."
And thus began an extremely Miley-heavy episode of "SNL," as she appeared in most of the night's sketches and gave two pared-down performances of her hits, "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball." While she's made headlines for both the music videos for those songs and her attire while performing them live, on "SNL" Cyrus turned in two tasteful sets that were focused less on her dance moves and more on her voice.
She also provided impersonations of a few famous faces, including Scarlett Johansson and Hillary Clinton, but the favorite of the night was her take on Michele Bachmann in a parody of her "We Can't Stop" music video, "We Did Stop (The Government)."
With Taran Killam playing Speaker John Boehner in a tight white tank and matching leggings, the parody was easily one of the night's best sketches.
Sample lyrics: "To my government workers on the furlough, even though you're already paid low: Remember only God can judge us, forget the haters, because somebody elected us."
One topic conspicuously missing from the broadcast was any mention of Sinead O'Connor, the singer Cyrus has been publicly battling with over social media.
It all began when O'Connor wrote an open letter to Cyrus last week about her nudity and suggestiveness in the "Wrecking Ball" music video. Cyrus hit back with a tweeted dig at O'Connor's past mental health issues, as well as the infamous moment in 1992 when the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II on "SNL."
Yet for all those who waited patiently to see how "SNL" and Cyrus would tackle the back-and-forth -- which on Friday grew to threats of legal action -- they were left disappointed. Sinead O'Connor wasn't mentioned, nor was a photo dramatically torn in her honor.
Overall, the episode was smooth, light on nudity and mainly twerk-free.
"Hey, look at that," tweeted the Huffington Post's Mike Ryan. "Miley Cyrus didn't just play an exaggerated version of herself and she was really good."
For The Hollywood Reporter, Cyrus' episode outshone last week's "SNL" premiere with veteran Tina Fey.
Even Kirstie Alley weighed in with support.
So why didn't Cyrus incorporate the one dance move that's been at the center of the insane amount of debate she's caused?
Well, "I used to think twerking was cool," Cyrus explained during her monologue. "But now that white people are doing it it seems kinda lame."
